| Horizontal Paddle Wheel |
Paddle assemblies on submerged horizontal shafts can vary in size, rotation speed from shaft to shaft, and spacing. The drive unit is located in either a dry well or above the water. Dry well units incorporate a stuffing box to prevent leakage. High volume water plants can utilize horizontal designs with limited drive units. |
| Vertical Paddle Wheel |
Paddles rotate counter or concurrent to the water flow depending on design parameters. Compartmentalization is simplified due to the vertical, single reel designed shaft. A minimum of three compartments is recommended for this design. |
| Walking Beam |
Paddles shift in a reciprocating motion by means of a beam which rotates up and down. The beam is attached to drive mechanisms which are above the water level. This design ensures full coverage of the basins and is the most accessible for maintenance purposes. |
